Career and daily work of Dominik Blöchlinger

Dominik Blöchlinger is a project manager at STEINEL Solutions. Thank you for answering a few questions for us, Dominik. We want to start the interview right away to find out about your background and get to know your typical workday.

Training

What training did you start your career with?

"I completed a four-year apprenticeship as an automation engineer in Altendorf."

What further training did you do after that?

"From 2016 to 2019, I completed further training to become a certified technician in business processes. And in 2023, I completed a two-year postgraduate course to become a certified project manager in project management."

Why did you decide on this career path?

"Like many people, I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do when I left school. But I knew I didn't want to go straight into an office job and wanted to do something practical first. I found out about the profession of automation engineer from my brother, who was already working in the electrical industry, and from a visit to the careers fair. I really liked it because it's a very broad-based profession."

After my training, I worked in a pharmaceutical company and wired, piped and cabled fermentation plants as an electrician in Switzerland and abroad. Even then, I had the opportunity to lead smaller teams abroad. Among other things, I managed, led and coordinated the installation of the largest fermentation plant in history in this position in Seoul, South Korea. I had 15 employees in my project team. That's when I realised that this is what I really like doing! I like taking responsibility and I'm good with people. From that point on, I saw myself leading teams in the future. My then-supervisor also recognised this and, due to a division of departments, he transferred me to the position of head of electrical production. At the same time, I completed further training to become a certified technician in business processes.

After returning from my English study stay in Australia, I decided to round off my CV and therefore worked in electrical planning for two years. In this area, too, I managed, led and coordinated various projects. During this time, I realised that I wanted to go into project management. Of course, I asked my then employer if there was an internal opportunity, but unfortunately there was no such department at the time. Nevertheless, I then started the postgraduate course to become a certified project manager NDS HF in project management."

What brought you to STEINEL Solutions?

"During my studies, my brother, who was already working for STEINEL Solutions AG at the time, told me that they were looking for a project manager. At the interview, Stefan Walker presented STEINEL very well and convinced me to take the plunge. A short time later, I started working at STEINEL and I still really like it here."

Everyday working life

What makes working as a project manager at STEINEL Solutions exciting for you?

"The versatility of the many different products. As a project manager, I am not only the one who creates and tracks the project schedules, but I also work on the product from A to Z, am involved in the brainstorming, accompany the electronic and mechanical development, work closely with production, set up production lines; in short, I am right in the middle of the complete industrialisation process. Keywords such as risk management, FMEA analysis, the assessment of the 0-series and the test series, checking the products, shipping and collecting samples, checking the packaging, visiting customers are part of my daily routine. I am always involved with the product from the idea to the market launch. All this and the contact with people is what makes my work at STEINEL special."

What does your typical workday at STEINEL Solutions look like?

"Phew... It's very varied. I usually have one or two larger meetings a day with the project team or with customers. I organise myself with work packages, usually blocks of about two hours for replying to emails and assigning tasks. Of course, I also get daily status reports from a number of different departments and colleagues. I can often be found in the production area or on the phone with our purchasing department and suppliers, discussing technical details. Flexibility is definitely a must in my job."

How many products you have worked on so far are on the market today?

"To keep it short, I will limit myself here to the products that I have worked on in the name of STEINEL Solutions AG. For example, there is a wearable for cyclists, the Steasy - a mobile mini-steamer, various assembled printed circuit boards for different customers, a wall switch and sensors for a well-known company, our own products SENSOTEC, electricity meters, an electric charging station for e-cars, train displays, an intelligent cutting board and, of course, a lot is still in the pipeline - it remains exciting."

Do you have a favourite product?

"At the moment, it would have to be the Steady. It was a time-consuming project for a very cool product."
