Career and daily work of Ronald Reichmuth

Ronald Reichmuth is a hardware and firmware developer at STEINEL Solutions. Thank you very much for answering our questions, Ronald. We'd like to start the interview right away to find out about your background and get to know your typical workday.

Training

When did you graduate?

"I completed my degree in electrical engineering in Rapperswil in 2007."

Why did you choose this particular course of study back then?

"I was interested in electronics and computer technology from a very early age. During my apprenticeship as an electronics engineer at Siemens, I was able to get a taste of various departments and support electronics engineers at work. That's when I knew that this was what I wanted to do later on. A degree opens doors to really exciting projects."

What do you find exciting about this specialisation?

"Our world is becoming increasingly interconnected. It's extremely exciting to understand the technologies and see how they are used in our daily lives."

Everyday working life

What do you find exciting about working in development at STEINEL Solutions?

"In OEM engineering at STEINEL Solutions, we are always able to work on exciting customer projects and see how an idea is turned into a product. Today, we are developing a sprayer for applying cosmetic creams in an interdisciplinary team; next year, we will optimise the heating control of a coffee machine or integrate a motion sensor into a toilet flush plate (editor's note: see reference TECE GmbH)."

What does your typical working day at STEINEL Solutions look like?

"Start the notebook, get coffee, scrum..."

Products

How many products that you have worked on in your career are on the market today?

"After graduating, I worked in a spin-off where, among other things, I helped develop high-speed cameras that were later used as goal-line cameras at the World Cup. At Siemens, I worked for years on an entire platform that gave rise to many product variants, and at STEINEL, some lights and sensors are already in use by customers. In total, there are certainly more than 20 products."

What is the greatest product you have worked on to date? And why?

"The most amazing product is definitely the SENSOTEC NET product family, which I worked on. It had everything: housing, hardware and software development. The sensors are networked with Bluetooth Mesh, a relatively new standard that is also used in the field of IoT."

Technologies and methods

How have your work and the technology changed over the past few years?

"I used to develop more hardware, but now the know-how is increasingly in the software or in the interaction between hardware and software."

Have working methods changed since you graduated? What are the advantages and disadvantages of today's technology, e.g. Scrum?

"Development work is becoming more and more complex, whether it's regulatory guidelines or requirements that are constantly changing. The teams are usually interdisciplinary and spread across various locations. Communication channels are shorter and development is becoming more and more agile – all in all, it's a bit more stressful."

Portrait of the employee whose career is the subject of discussion

"In OEM engineering at STEINEL Solutions, we work on exciting customer projects. Every day, we see how an idea is turned into a product. Since our customers operate in a wide range of industries and the products have a wide range of applications, no two days are the same."
