Career and daily work of Felix Kälin

Felix Kälin is team leader THT (assembly & testing) at STEINEL Solutions. Thank you very much, Felix, for agreeing to answer a few questions. We would like to start the interview by learning a little about your career and your day-to-day work.

Training

What training did you complete before starting your career?

"I completed a four-year apprenticeship as an electronics technician at STEINEL Solutions in Einsiedeln."

What further training did you do after that?

"In 2022, I started further training to become a certified process engineer HF (formerly technician HF business process) and finished in 2025."

Why did you choose this career path?

"I grew up with my parents in our own house, where there was always something to do. Even as a young boy, I was allowed to watch my father at work and actively help him. I particularly enjoyed everything to do with electricity. My father was able to explain electrical topics to me very well, as he had trained as an electrician.

Electricity fascinated me right from the start, which is why I attended the electronics4you workshop at OST (then HSR) in my first year of secondary school. When it came to choosing a career in my second year, I knew straight away that I wanted to do something related to electricity. After trying out various professions, I decided to train as an electronics technician. After completing my training, which I finished as the second-best in the canton of Schwyz, I moved to the production department within the company. I have always enjoyed my work, not least because my supervisor has strongly encouraged me from the very beginning. This made me want to continue my education, both practically and theoretically. I wanted to understand how production is structured and everything that goes into it throughout the company. That's why I decided to pursue further training to become a certified process engineer.

What brought you to STEINEL Solutions?

"I've been with STEINEL since completing my training as an electronics technician. When I was at secondary school, aged around 14–15, the following points were important to me when choosing an employer:

a good team

a competent and friendly apprentice supervisor

exciting work that I would be able to do

a short commute

STEINEL was able to fulfil all of these criteria back then, and still does today. Of course, other important factors have come to the fore over time. STEINEL fulfils these too, which is why I still really enjoy working here.

Everyday working life

What makes working as THT & testing team leader at STEINEL Solutions exciting for you?

"The variety, because my department is divided into two sub-areas: Assembly & testing and new product introduction (NPI). Depending on the workload and staffing levels, I work in both sub-areas, which means I am constantly faced with different challenges. In addition, STEINEL has a very broad product portfolio, which means I come into contact with a wide range of products."

What does your everyday work at STEINEL Solutions look like?

"It's actually always different. The only routine I have is weekly meetings and staff planning. All other tasks vary from day to day, partly due to the diversity of the products."

Products

How many products that you have worked on are currently on the market?

"Countless. In all the years I've been working in production, I've come into contact with a wide variety of products. I encountered many different products, particularly in the NPI department and while overseeing AOI (automatic optical inspection), for which I was responsible."

Do you have a "favourite product"?

"It's difficult for me to identify a single product that I would call my favourite,
as there are so many exciting and great products.
However, if I had to choose just one, it would be a product from
our customer smart-me, as I was able to accompany and support the entire industrialisation process."

How has your job changed in recent years?

"As my position and therefore my area of responsibility have changed constantly over the last few years, I can't name any specific changes to the job itself. Starting as an apprentice, then working as an electronics production employee, becoming a team leader in THT production and now being promoted to deputy department manager, my career path is something I am personally proud of and for which I am grateful to STEINEL."

Portrait of the employee whose career is being discussed.

"I was hired in production immediately after completing my apprenticeship and received continuous support from day one, which enabled me to acquire a great deal of new knowledge very quickly. The early support, the product diversity and my current area of responsibility are what make my job at STEINEL so exciting."
